VALLEY COLLEGE : 2 Battle to Lead Teachers Guild
Leon Marzillier, mathematics department chairman, is campaigning vigorously in an attempt to unseat Gwen Hill, president of the Valley College unit of the American Federation of Teachers College Guild.
Two-term incumbent Hill has come under fire from Marzillier in recent campus debates. Marzillier has accused Hill of not taking a strong stand against what he called a waste of funds by the Los Angeles Community College District bureaucracy. As a result, classroom instruction has suffered, he said. “I would fight district administrators on their wastefulness.”
Hill said Marzillier’s accusations are unfounded.
“I think Leon is in over his head as far as campaigning for president, let alone if he’s elected,” she said.
Hill said if she is elected her aims are to secure preparation time for part-time faculty, negotiate a more attractive salary package and upgrade computing equipment.
Marzillier is currently Valley College’s representative to the American Federation of Teachers’ district executive board.
“Instructors’ benefits also are in jeopardy because President Hill has been persuaded away from the concept of benefits being locked into three-year contracts,” he said.
The election for Local 1521 began Monday and continues through Thursday.
