RIOT AFTERMATH : Financial Toll
For government agencies already straining to make ends meet during the most prolonged recession since World War II, the Los Angeles riots dealt another direct financial blow. Hardest hit is the city of Los Angeles, which already faced a projected budget deficit of nearly $183 million. Here is a look at some of the costs already incurred.
City of Los Angeles
Damage to equipment, facilities, etc. (does not include figures from police or fire departments) Department of Water and Power: $12 million Libraries, park and recreation facilities, etc.: $3 million TOTAL: $15 million Police (overtime): $9.6 million Fire (overtime): $700,000 TOTAL: $10.3 million
Los Angeles County Overtime pay for deputies: $700,000 per day
Federal Army, Marines, National Guard, air support: $1.84 million per day
