BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Javier Mourns While He Plays

Share

Stan Javier rejoined the Dodgers Tuesday while grieving the death of Ceasar Negrette, his brother-in-law who was like an older brother. Negrette, 35, died suddenly and accidentally last Thursday in the Dominican Republic.

Javier wishes to keep the cause of death private, but its effect on him is no secret.

“This is going to bother me the rest of this year. . . . This will bother me the rest of my life,” said Javier, who is batting .190. “I am lucky I have a family to hold me together.”

Javier received the news Thursday morning but could not catch a flight to the Dominican Republic until Friday. He flew directly to Philadelphia from the island Tuesday, and drove to Veterans Stadium from the airport.

“I wanted to get in some extra hitting, to try and get on with my life,” said Javier, who drew a walk as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning, then stole second and scored on a single by Mike Sharperson.

Dave Anderson, who joined the team from triple-A Albuquerque last weekend as the replacement for Kal Daniels, started at third base against Philadelphia Phillies’ left-hander Terry Mulholland Tuesday. Anderson will platoon with Dave Hansen until Hansen can raise his .147 batting average. Anderson said he has not played third base with any regularity in the major leagues since 1985 with the Dodgers, but he made a few starts there for Albuquerque. Anderson was making his first appearance as a Dodger since leaving the team as a free agent after the 1990 season. . . . Todd Benzinger said the players will come to regret the scheduling of a makeup game with the Montreal Expos on July 13, the day before the All-Star game. “A lot of guys really look forward to the three days off with their families,” Benzinger said. “Now a lot of us who live far away can forget about going home. It’s going to be a different.” . . . Instead of facing Tommy Greene, who has a 6.20 earned-run average against them, the Dodgers will face Danny Cox today. Greene is suffering from tendinitis in his right shoulder. Cox held them to two runs in 6 2/3 innings last week.
