Three Orange County men were arrested east of San Diego on Saturday morning after they led California Highway Patrol officers and Orange County sheriff’s deputies on a 125-mile chase along southbound Interstate 405 and Interstate 5, shooting repeatedly at the pursuing officers with automatic weapons.

The suspects, all believed to be residents of Orange County with histories of felony convictions, fled down foggy freeways about 2:30 a.m. Saturday at speeds of up 110 m.p.h., firing at officers while leaning out of the passenger’s window, according to CHP Officer Bob Melton.

No officers or motorists were injured during the chase, which ended in the community of Alpine, along Interstate 8 and Tavern Road east of El Cajon.

The three men, being held at the San Diego County Sheriff’s Central Detention Facility, are Albert Lee Miles, 34, his brother Norman Kelly Miles, 28, and Samuel Arthur Davis, 28, Melton said. Officers confiscated six handguns, five rifles, a small quantity of drugs and a combination safe containing $20,000.

The chase began on the southbound San Diego Freeway at Jeffrey Road in Irvine when the three men sped past a sheriff’s deputy at 80 to 90 m.p.h. When they refused to stop, a second sheriff’s unit joined the pursuit through Orange County and onto Interstate 5, Melton said. The suspects fired at the deputies without hitting them. The deputies did not return the fire.

“One of the sheriffs said that he could see the muzzle blast” from the handgun, Melton said. “And he knew they were firing directly at him. They were definitely shooting to kill.”

When the fleeing car reached Oceanside, two CHP units took up the chase, with the Orange County sheriff’s units trailing.

“The suspects were seated on the passenger window sill firing at the officers over their roof,” Melton said. “It must be windy, shooting at 100 m.p.h., because they even shot up their own car.”

One of the CHP units was disabled when a bullet struck its radiator.

As the chase continued east to Interstate 8 from the southbound Interstate 805, two additional CHP units joined the pursuit. A second CHP unit was struck in the windshield and a another took a bullet in a door post, but none of the officers were injured.

The CHP officers and sheriff’s deputies trailed the vehicle through the fog, staying just close enough to see the taillights. “We were hoping they would run out of gas,” Melton said.

The three gunmen got off the freeway, then headed back west along the interstate and exited again at Tavern Road, where additional CHP units were waiting for them. All three were arrested without incident, authorities said, and are expected to be charged with attempted murder of a peace officer.
