NEWPORT BEACH : 700 Apply for 4 New Firefighter Openings

Share

About 700 applicants will vie this month for four jobs in the Newport Beach Fire Department, department officials said Monday. The openings are the first in five years.

Applicants will undergo an intense physical and oral exam and review period, including special requirements related to ocean and bay rescues, according to fire officials.

Officials hope the interview process will be completed by mid-summer and the four jobs filled immediately.

All of the applicants recently completed a written exam, with the top 400 scorers going on to the swimming tests, an unusual requirement among county fire departments but necessary in Newport Beach because of the ocean and bay. After the swimming tests, applicants will move on to the standard physical section of the exam.

The 100 finalists after the swimming and physical exams will be interviewed for the four firefighter positions.
