Measures on Limiting Council Terms, Offshore Drilling on June 2 Ballot

Share

In addition to electing two City Council members June 2, city voters will decide on two local measures--one limiting the length of service of City Council members and the other related to offshore oil drilling.

If approved, Measure U would limit members of the City Council to two consecutive four-year terms. Under the terms of the ordinance, a council member could sit out for two years, and then serve on the council again.

Also on the ballot will be Measure V. If it is approved, a city vote would be required before any support facilities for offshore oil drilling are installed within the city limits.

A similar ordinance has already been enacted in Laguna Beach.

Both measures were placed on the ballot by vote of the City Council. If approved, both would again require a vote by the council to become law, said City Clerk Kathy Hollywood.
