IRVINE : Musick Jail Escape Is Sixth This Year

Share

A prisoner who escaped from the James A. Musick Branch Jail on Monday night was the sixth prisoner to flee the minium-security facility this year.

Jose Garivay, 25, who was serving a term for burglary, was seen fleeing the grounds by another prisoner shortly after 8:30 p.m. An initial search by Orange County sheriff’s deputies failed to turn up the missing prisoner and a subsequent head count determined that the escapee was Garivay.

The Santa Ana resident had begun serving an eight-month sentence in April. Officials said that Garivay, also known as Jose Galvan, is not considered dangerous.

Sheriff’s Department Lt. Richard Olson said four men had escaped from the Musick jail by this time last year. Of the six who have fled so far this year, three have been caught and sent to a maximum-security section of the Orange County Jail.

The most recent captures came March 1, when police apprehended Juventino Pulgaren Torres and Martin Mendoza Ortega. Both men had escaped from Musick that same day.

“If we don’t catch (escapees) within a few days, it’s much more difficult to apprehend them,” Olson said.
