MEXICO CITY — Millions of monarch butterflies that migrated last winter from Canada to Mexico died because of the destruction of Mexican forests by logging, an environmentalist said Tuesday.
“It was a massive death. The ground was carpeted with butterflies,” said Homero Aridjis, leader of the Group of 100, Mexico’s best-known environmental group.
A full 70% of those that flew from Ontario to their natural habitat in Mexico’s central state of Michoacan died because of deforestation and resulting climate changes, Aridjis said.
