Texas billionaire Ross Perot leads both President Bush and Democratic contender Bill Clinton in California, according to a new California Poll released Wednesday.

Thirty-seven percent of those surveyed would vote for Perot, 31% for Bush and 25% for Clinton, according to the poll. Seven percent were undecided.

“Voters are searching for a candidate they can be enthusiastic about, and the major party candidates are not appealing to them,” said Mark DiCamillo, managing editor of the poll. “Right now, Perot is filling that void. . . .”

In fact, the only candidate whose favorable ratings exceeded his unfavorable ratings was Perot, the poll showed.

The Texas businessman, who has said he will run as an independent if volunteers can get him on the state ballots, had a favorable-to-unfavorable rating of 45%-17%.

By contrast, Bush’s favorable-unfavorable rating was 43%-56%; Clinton’s, 37%-54%; and the other Democrat in the race, former California Gov. Edmund G. (Jerry) Brown Jr., 37%-58%.
