VENTURA : Man to Face Trial in Woman’s Slaying

Share

A June 22 jury trial date has been set for a mentally disturbed man charged with the slaying of a 90-year-old Ventura woman in January.

Superior Court Judge James McNally set the date Wednesday after ruling that Kevin Jon Kolodziej, 25, is competent to stand trial.

Attorneys for the defendant have entered pleas of not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity.

McNally said his decision was based on reports from psychiatrists who interviewed Kolodziej and who said that although he had mental problems he was competent to stand trial.

Kolodziej is charged with stabbing to death Velasta Johnson in her home near Ventura County Medical Center. The man wandered away from the hospital, where he was being treated.
