PRECAUTIONS: There’s good reason to reinforce Serra’s Chapel at Mission San Juan Capistrano (B1). Still visible are ruins of the first mission church, savaged by a sharp quake in 1812. . . . That church, 60 yards long with six domes and a 120-foot bell tower, had been completed only six years earlier, and its opening had attracted visitors from as far away as Santa Barbara. . . . The quake, which struck during Mass, felled the bell tower, killing 40.
