BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : DiSarcina Feels at Home on Road

Shortstop Gary DiSarcina, who grew up and still lives in the Boston suburb of Billerica, doesn’t mind having to scramble for extra tickets for friends and relatives when the Angels play the Red Sox at Fenway Park this weekend.

“I’ve got a few requests, but I’m really looking forward to it,” he said “I was lucky enough to grow up going to games there. It’s really distinct. It’s really Boston.”

But the three-game series won’t be his Fenway debut.

“I played there for two college all-star games,” said DiSarcina, who attended the University of Massachusetts. “But there’s a big difference: There were only about 50 people in the stands for those games. This is going to be fun.”

Catcher John Orton, whose 20-day rehabilitation assignment to triple-A Edmonton expires today, was hitting .286 for the Trappers through Sunday. Orton missed almost all of spring training because of a shoulder injury, but is catching every day.

“We’ve been getting good reports,” Manager Buck Rodgers said. “So far his arm has been fine.”

Rodgers isn’t inclined to promote Orton until he can guarantee the catcher sufficient playing time. Mike Fitzgerald has been catching while Lance Parrish is on the disabled list because of bone spurs in his right elbow. Ron Tingley is available to spell Fitzgerald.

Von Hayes, five for 23 during the just-completed home stand, didn’t mind packing his bags. “It wasn’t the greatest home stand for me personally, but the guys picked me up, and down the road, I’ll pick them up,” he said. “This is a pretty close group, with a lot of guys who respect each other. That’s what it takes to win, 25 guys.” . . . Junior Felix’s three-hit game Wednesday was his fourth this season. . . . Gary Gaetti has hits in 15 of his last 17 games.
