Gary Batson, driving in his first race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, was burned over 80% of his body after an accident during a qualifying race for The Winston Sportsman 150.
Batson, 36, of Travelers Rest, S.C., was listed in critical condition, with third-degree burns over 25% of his body, speedway spokesmen said.
