For Karcher, Compensation Comes in More Than One Bite

Hamburger mogul Carl N. Karcher’s pay package seems pretty modest for a guy who runs one of the state’s biggest fast-food operations.

But there’s pay and then there’s income.

Karcher’s family trust owns properties that are leased back to Carl Karcher Enterprises Inc.--including the corporate headquarters in Anaheim.

In 1991, when Karcher’s pay totaled $400,048, the trust pulled in more than $1.6 million in rent.

The trust also is beneficiary of a $1-million insurance policy on the life of Karcher and a $250,000 policy on the life of his wife, Margaret M. Karcher, for which the company paid about $64,000 in premiums during 1991.

The Anaheim-based company has more than 600 outlets in five states and in Mexico, Japan, Malaysia and China. Its 1991 sales were $534 million; it posted profits of $13 million for the year.
