Assessor Says Service Free for Exemptions

Los Angeles County Assessor Kenneth P. Hahn has warned homeowners that an independent organization is charging a $35 processing fee to file for a homeowner’s exemption.

“We provide the service free of charge,” Hahn said. “All new homeowner’s are automatically sent an application for the homeowner’s exemption by the assessor’s office. If the homeowner does not complete the application or returns an exemption claim form other than that issued by the assessor, they do not receive the exemption.”

If homeowners do not have an exemption for their principal residence, they can request a claim form from any of the assessor’s 13 regional offices. The exemption would allow a $7,000 yearly reduction in assessed valuation. For additional information call (213) 974-3113.
