Two Sockers Get All-MSL Recognition

Share

Two Sockers who helped the team establish the league’s stingiest defense were named to the All-MSL first team, announced Monday.

With goalie Victor Nogueira and defender Kevin Crow, the Sockers were the only team to have two representatives on the first team. Voting was done by two media members in each MSL city. Nogueira was the only player named to the first team on all 14 ballots cast. Crow received nine first-team votes, three second-team and one third-team vote.

It was the eighth time Crow has gained All-MSL status wich ties him with Steve Zungul for second most in league history. Only Branko Segota, who was named to the second team, has more appointments (nine).

Somewhat surprisingly, Sockers defender Ben Collins was named to the second team despite having played under the pace he established a year earlier. Another Socker, forward Paul Wright, was given honorable mention. Wright, 22 and a four-year veteran, gained his first postseason recognition. He led the Sockers in goals with 50 (third in the league).

The first team also included Baltimore defender Iain Fraser, Cleveland forward Zoran Karic, St. Louis midfielder Preki and Dallas forward Tatu.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

University of San Diego sophomores Laura Richards and Julie McKeon did not fare well in singles competition during the NCAA Division I championships at Stanford. Each lost in the first round.

But later they won in doubles as did Sue Hawke and Nicole Storto of San Diego State.

Richards-McKeon, seeded 15th, defeated Liz Barker-Dana Evans of Wake Forest, 6-3, 6-4, and will face No. 17 Eveline Hamers and Rebecca Jensen today.
