At the clay-court European Open in Lucerne, Switzerland, Marianne Werdel of the United States was defeated by Katerina Kroupova of Czechoslovakia, 6-2, 6-3. Sabine Hack of Germany beat Maya Kidowaki of Japan, 6-2, 6-1, and will next face top-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria, the defending champion.
