SHERMAN OAKS : Christians and Jews Open 3-Day Meeting
Evangelical Christian and Jewish leaders Tuesday night opened a three-day conference designed to establish national contacts between the two religious groups that share affections for Israel but sometimes clash over attempts to convert Jews to Christianity.
The invitation-only meeting at the Valley Hilton will hear plenary speeches today from Rabbi A. James Rudin, director of interreligious affairs for the American Jewish Committee, and Marvin Wilson, biblical studies professor at Gordon College, Wenham, Mass.
“Evangelical and charismatic churches are the fastest-growing part of Christianity, and we have the least amount of knowledge and contacts with them on an organizational basis,” said James Doherty of the Jewish Federation Council’s Jewish Community Relations Committee.
Doherty and David Lewis of the Assemblies of God convened the conference, which they said will become an annual gathering.
