Whittier : Vacant Seat on City Council to Be Filled by Appointment

A vacant City Council seat will be filled by appointment to save the expense of a special election, council members decided Tuesday. The council directed staff members to begin accepting applications.

Whittier officials said the cost of a special election would have been $35,000 to $40,000.

The council seat was vacated one week after the April 14 election when Larry Haendiges, a local businessman, resigned after disclosing that he had filed false police reports during the campaign.

The deadline to submit applications is 5 p.m. June 4. The council plans to make the selection June 23.

“With the amount of people we have in this community, we should be able to find one decent person,” Councilwoman Helen McKenna-Rahder said.
