NCAA TENNIS : UCLA Duo Wins Twice, in Final

Mamie Ceniza and Iwalani McCalla of UCLA won two matches Wednesday to reach the doubles final of the NCAA women’s tennis tournament at Stanford.

Ceniza and McCalla defeated Amanda Gregory and Marija Neubauer of Wisconsin, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals and Shannon Kagawa and Mandy Wilson of Tennessee, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals.

Ceniza and McCalla will face top-seeded Susan Gilchrist and Vickie Paynter of Texas, who defeated Julie McKeon and Laura Richards of the University of San Diego, 6-2, 7-5, in the semifinals.

Shannan McCarthy of Georgia and Florida freshman Lisa Raymond reached the singles final. McCarthy defeated third-seeded Laxmi Poruri of Stanford, 6-2, 6-3, and Raymond beat Paloma Collantes of Mississippi, 6-4, 6-2.

Brian MacPhie, David Ekerot, Wayne Black and Jon Leach of USC each won first-round matches at the NCAA men’s tournament in Athens, Ga., but UCLA’s four entrants were eliminated.

Charles Auffray and Howard Joffe of Pepperdine advanced, but three of their teammates lost.
