Violent crime rose 7% in the area patrolled by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department during the first quarter of 1992 compared to the same period last year, Sheriff Jim Roache said Thursday.

Overall crime was up 4.4%, and the biggest increases were in Vista (54.8%), San Marcos (46.1%) and Encinitas (24%), Roache said. The rates for other cities the department patrols were: Del Mar (13.5%), Poway (5%), Lemon Grove (5%) and Imperial Beach (0.5%). Overall crime was down in Santee by 6.7%, in the unincorporated county by 12.8% and in Solana Beach by 13.3%.

Violent crimes are described as homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assault. Property crimes are burglary, larceny-theft, and motor-vehicle theft. Overall crime is a combination of the two.

Roache said he was especially concerned because violent crime had fallen by 7% during the first quarter of 1991 from 1990. The first quarter of any year is usually a slow time for crime, he said.

The Sheriff’s Department serves 705,281 people.
