TENNIS ROUNDUP : Sampras, Rostagno Lose as Czechs Beat U.S. in World Team Cup
Petr Korda and Karel Novacek led Czechoslovakia to a 3-0 sweep over a United States team anchored by Pete Sampras Thursday at Duesseldorf, Germany, and tightened its grip on the Blue Group lead at the World Team Cup.
Korda beat Sampras, 6-3, 6-1, and Novacek defeated Derrick Rostagno, 6-3, 6-4. In doubles, Patrick McEnroe and Jim Grabb managed to win the first set, 7-5, but Korda and Cyril Suk won the next two, 6-3, 6-4.
In the other match, also in the Blue Group, Germany beat Russia, 2-1.
Eighth-seeded Debbie Graham beat qualifier Julia Jehs of Germany, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Strasbourg Open at Strasbourg, France.
Sandra Cecchini of Italy, seeded seventh, was upset by wild-card entry Mercedes Paz of Argentina, 6-1, 6-1, in a second-round match.
Bart Wuyts of Belgium upset second-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, in a tournament at Bologna, Italy, assuring that no seeded player will make the quarterfinals. The unseeded Wuyts is ranked No. 116.
