A Starry Night in Hollywood

COMPILED BY GAILE ROBINSON

Tuesday night at the Hollywood Athletic Club was quite a scene according to manager Ian Gray. It all started when Demi Moore arrived, more than seven hours late, to meet mega photographer Annie Leibovitz for a Vanity Fair magazine photo session. Moore, by the way, was covered in head-to-toe body paint--and little else. Husband Bruce Willis and baby were on hand to watch. Only seconds after that entrance, Grammy guy Michael Bolton waltzed in with professional arm piece, Brooke Shields. Next the Bravo channel camera crews showed up to film Dodger relief pitcher Roger McDowell who was also there that night. Then a huge contingent of free-lance photographers, in town to shoot “A Day in the Life of Hollywood,” a photo book, crossed the threshold. They were followed by the Showtime channel camera crews who are documenting the “Day” shooting. A Kodak mega-moment?

* WHO ASKED YOU?: Oscar de la Renta, from a recent interview in the Baltimore Sun: “Movie stars are the biggest messes I’ve ever seen. People ask me who I dressed for the Oscars and I say, ‘No one.’ I would hate to dress any of them.”

* HAIRCUT, LIPSTICK AND A FREE NAG: More than one Hollywood-er is getting spruced up for spring. Roseanne Arnold has a soft bob with bangs, by Cristophe of Beverly Hills. But he’s a bit worried about the upkeep. “I’m going to call her and tell her she needs a trim” he said. “Otherwise she’ll never make an appointment.” Kevin Costner’s wife, Cindy, had a makeup makeover, during a stop at the Marilyn Young beauty boutique on Sunset Boulevard. “She loves my splendor,” said Young. Nothing personal, that’s the name of the lipstick Costner bought. * THE CAUSE WAS ALMOST LOST: Claudia Schiffer went native in a fashion show to help save the rain forest. The Guess girl was among those on the runway Monday in New York for Don’t Bungle the Jungle II, a show of jungle-inspired costumes organized by artist Kenny Scharf. Schiffer wore a $20,000 python-inspired dress by Calvin Klein. Fred Schneider of the B-52s wore Matsuda’s $9,200 “kimono-style leaf suit, the fabric painted with dyes made from sustainable plants and trees,” a show official said. The event, at the outdoor Amazon Village club, was expected to raise $200,000.

* THE SILVER LINING: While most of the nation bids farewell to Johnny Carson tonight, fashion victims may be wondering what will happen to all of Doc Severinsen’s outlandish wardrobe. During an interview to air next month on cable network E! Entertainment Television, he confessed, “I tried to give some of my clothes to charity and they sent them back.”

* ALL’S FAIR: In attempts to weather L.A.’s riots at least one local fashion shop tried the diversionary approach. Workers at Retail Slut on Melrose Avenue pulled items out of the display windows and put up a “For Lease” sign. Anyone with criminal intentions came upon a seemingly abandoned storefront. The shop emerged unscathed.

* FLASHBACKS: Roots, the Canadian company that brought you earth shoes in the ‘70s, has opened a store in Beverly Hills. And, yes, shoes will be part of the environmentally conscious stock. But company co-founder Michael Bubman has other feathers in his cap, like the entertainment industry. “It’s a big part of our business,” he says, and he has the jackets to prove it. Along with T-shirts, jeans, handbags, luggage and furniture, the Beverly Hills store is loaded with the baseball-style jackets Roots originally made for Gilda Radner and the crew of “Saturday Night Live”. There are also copies of the belted leather jacket Michael Douglas wore in “Black Rain.”
