After the Riots : NEWS IN BRIEF : AID : U.S. Eases Rules for Food Stamp Help

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Thursday announced a relaxation of eligibility rules to give more food stamp aid to Los Angeles riot victims.

The move came three days after the ACLU Foundation of Southern California and two other public interest attorney groups filed a class-action lawsuit in U.S. District Court, claiming the federal government was illegally denying the assistance.

The USDA move partially reverses an earlier decision that additional food stamp relief was unnecessary, according to a USDA spokesman, who said a modified emergency aid program will be available Tuesday in Los Angeles County.

ACLU attorney Mark Rosenbaum said he was “pleased the federal government is finally turning its attention to food needs of disaster victims,” but he is concerned that all victims still might not qualify.
