Australian Navy to Rescue Clams
The Royal Australian Navy said Sunday that it will come to the rescue of 9,000 clams that are at risk because of overcrowding.
The clams, tridacna gigas, are an endangered species, and the navy has agreed to relocate 6,000 of the them.
The clams have multiplied as a result of a breeding project at James Cook University at Orpheus Island, off the north Queensland coast.
“The oldest clams now weigh 8 to 10 kilograms (18 to 22 pounds) and are severely crowding each other,” said Mike Bugler, a senior project officer for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
The clams will be moved to a variety of reefs in the region.
