TENNIS ROUNDUP : Spain Wins Its Third Team Title
Spain defeated Czechoslovakia in singles Sunday for its third World Team Cup title, at Duesseldorf, Germany.
Emilio Sanchez beat Petr Korda, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6-2), and Sergi Bruguera beat Karel Novacek, 6-2, 6-4, to ensure the title for Spain. Sanchez and Sergio Casal then beat Novacek and Cyril Suk, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the doubles
Spain also won the World Team Cup in 1983 and in 1978, the first year of the tournament.
Czechoslovakia took the title in 1981 and 1987.
Second-seeded Amy Frazier of the United States defeated third-seeded Radka Zrubakova of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, to win the $150,000 European Open in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Jaime Oncins of Brazil won his first ATP tournament by beating Renzo Furlan of Italy, 6-2, 6-4, in the Muratti Time of Bologna, Italy.
Judith Wiesner of Austria won the Strasbourg Open in France with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Noako Sawamatsu of Japan.
