Bert Blyleven on Sunday made his first relief appearance since June 10, 1984, and seventh of his 21-year career, opening the seventh inning as the fourth of five pitchers used in the Angels’ 6-4 loss to the Orioles.

Blyleven gave up one hit, a single by Glenn Davis, in his second appearance since coming back from rotator cuff surgery. He started against the Yankees last Tuesday and didn’t get the decision in a 5-4 loss at New York, going six innings and giving up three runs. He is scheduled to make his second start Saturday at Anaheim Stadium against the Cleveland Indians.

Blyleven’s last relief outing also followed an injury: He fractured a bone on the outside of his right foot while pitching for the Indians and sat out 15 days. He returned to face the Mariners and end a streak of 271 consecutive starts.

“I pitched 2 2/3 innings and (then-manager Pat) Corrales took me out with two out in the ninth after I walked a guy,” Blyleven recalled. “Boy, was I (angry). I wanted the save.”

He said he would rather not have pitched Sunday “because I wanted Chuck (Finley) to go nine,” but wouldn’t mind repeating it if asked. “A save would be nice. I could go for that, a three-inning save,” he said.

Von Hayes’ seventh-inning home run was his first run batted in 19 games, dating to April 17. Hayes had homered in his first at-bat as an Angel and had driven in seven runs in his first five games. . . . Pitching coach Marcel Lachemann was ejected in the seventh inning for disputing ball-and-strike calls. . . . Hubie Brooks, 0 for four Sunday, was three for 28 on the trip.
