VENTURA : Latinos to Look at Education Quality

Share

Latino leaders will hold a conference at Ventura College on Saturday to discuss teen-age dropouts, racism in schools and bilingual education, among other topics.

The conference, called Educational Challenges and the Empowerment of the Latino Community in the 1990s, is aimed at improving the quality of education for Latino students in Ventura County, said Marcos Vargas, executive director of El Concilio del Condado de Ventura.

“This is an opportunity to take a greater part in the educational process,” said Vargas, who said local school boards do not effectively represent Latino students.

“There is either one or two or no (minority) representatives at all,” said Vargas, who noted that Mary Barreto is the only Latino school trustee in the Oxnard Elementary School District, which boasts a 74.1% Latino student population.

Vargas said about 300 people are expected to attend the conference, which will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bus transportation will be available in Oxnard, Moorpark, Fillmore and Santa Paula.

The conference is open to the public.

Entrance fee for the general public is $5, but the conference is free for Oxnard school district students and their parents.
