Hotel Occupancy Rate Rises in Anaheim

Anaheim-area hotels packed in a few more guests--at higher prices--during the first three months this year, while hotels near John Wayne Airport continued to starve for patrons, according to a consulting firm in Los Angeles.

Overall, county hotels saw their occupancy increase during the first quarter to 59.4%, up 1.2% from 58.7% in last year’s first quarter. The average cost of a room was up to $77.64 a night, a 1.6% increase over $76.40 for the same period last year, according to PKF Consulting.

“On the tourism end, it’s looking better,” PKF’s Rick Schwartz said. “But from a business (travel) perspective, I think we are still suffering from recessionary conditions.”

Schwartz said he drew his conclusions from seeing the performance of the Anaheim area, which primarily caters to tourists and conventioneers, and the John Wayne Airport area, which handles most of the business travel.

Occupancy rose to 61.9% in Anaheim during the first quarter, up 2.3% from 60.6%. And the average room rate increased to $82.23, up from $78.16 for the same period in the previous year.

The airport area, by contrast, saw a drop in the occupancy rate to 58.2%, down 3.4% from 60.3% during last year’s first quarter. The average room rate fell too, to $76.54, down 3% from $78.87.

For the month of March alone, business at county hotels, as a group, remained flat. Occupancy was up 0.7% to 62.5% in March, from 62.1% during the same month a year ago. The average room rate was $76.99, down 1.1% from $77.83.
