Funeral services will be conducted today at Serra Chapel at Mission San Juan Capistrano for Evelyne Pope Forster, a member of one of Orange County’s historic families, who died this week of pancreatic cancer. She was 81.

Mrs. Forster was born Evelyne Pope in Alvarado, Tex., in 1910. Her family moved to El Centro, Calif., in her early teens and she later graduated from El Centro’s Central High School. She attended UCLA, where she met George C. (Buddy) Forster. They were married on Dec. 26, 1931, in Yuma, Ariz. He died four years ago.

In 1932, Evelyne and George Forster moved to Forster’s native San Juan Capistrano and lived in the same home on Del Obispo Street for the rest of their lives. The house, which is listed on the historic inventory of the Capistrano Valley, was built in 1892, and a celebration was held on May 23 marking its 100th year.

George Forster was a great grandson of Don Juan Forster, an early Orange County rancher who emigrated from England to San Juan Capistrano in the 1830s and at one time owned 250,000 acres in South County, including Rancho Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita and the land that is now Camp Pendleton. He also lived in Mission San Juan Capistrano for eight years after he bought it from Pio Pico, the last Mexican governor of California and his brother-in-law.

Mrs. Forster was the first kindergarten teacher at the Mission School on the grounds of Mission San Juan Capistrano. She was also a past president of the San Juan Capistrano Women’s Club and was active in the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society, the San Clemente Elks Ladies, the San Clemente Women’s Golf Club and the Shorecliff’s Women’s Golf Club.

She is survived by two sons, John C. Forster of Rancho Palos Verdes and Robert (Mickey) Forster of San Juan Capistrano; a daughter, Charlyne Enzweiler of Santa Barbara; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A rosary for Mrs. Forster was recited at Serra Chapel on Friday night.

After today’s 10 a.m. ceremony, a walking funeral procession will be held through downtown San Juan Capistrano across Ortega Highway to Old Mission San Juan Cemetery, where Mrs. Forster will be buried.
