Pat Burns, the 40-year-old former policeman who resigned as coach of the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday, was named coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Burns’ move sent him from a perennial contender with whom he posted a .609 winning percentage in his four seasons--the best mark in the NHL during that span--to a franchise that hasn’t finished over .500 since 1978-79.
