El Monte : Fireworks Won’t Be Free

The City Council last week decided to charge admission to the annual Fourth of July fireworks display.

As part of a plan to make up a $1.9-million budget shortfall, the council Tuesday considered a proposal to drop the show, which has been held every year since 1974, but decided to try to save it by selling tickets.

“I feel very sad that we’re in such dire financial straits that we cannot afford to appropriately celebrate the birthday of this great nation,” Councilman Jack Thurston said before the council approved a $9,600 contract with Pyro-Spectaculars of Rialto.

Admission to the event, at Arroyo High School Stadium, will be $3.50 per adult. Raffle tickets, which were previously free, will also be sold.
