Endorsement for District Attorney
Having read your editorials for over 25 years and agreeing with most of them, I cannot begin to fully express my shock and surprise when I first saw your endorsement of Sterling Norris for district attorney. I have now had a full day to reflect on your editorial and my emotions have turned to disappointment and outrage.
I served as a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles for over 15 years, starting at approximately the same time as Norris. Based on my experience, I question your selection of this candidate to run an office of almost 1,000 attorneys and an equal or greater number of support staff.
Your endorsement of Norris does not portray an accurate picture of Norris’ ethics as a prosecutor. Your own newspaper previously reported his use of a questionable jailhouse informant in the Skid Row slasher case and this fact is ignored in your editorial.
In addition, you should have pointed out that in an earlier election while running for the position of Superior Court judge, Norris was found to be unqualified by the Los Angeles Bar Assn.’s Judicial Qualifications Committee.
