Bus Service in South L.A.

Re “Transit Ideas for South L.A. Explored,” May 17:
I favor the RTD’s proposal to rebuild existing bus routes for fast and frequent service. That is exactly what this city needs. To allow the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission to run any type of train or busway along the Exposition Boulevard right of way would be a tremendous waste of our tax dollars. The right of way traverses stable, low-density neighborhoods (with schools in very close proximity to the tracks) and some light industry. Clearly much less demand for mass transit.
The RTD’s proposal to build where there is an immediate need for mass transportation service makes good sense and will be money well spent. Buses are more convenient for riders and therefore assure higher ridership than a rigid rail system.
