Don’t Hide the Violence

Have we learned nothing from the recent uprising in the streets of Los Angeles? Obviously, the Los Angeles Times has not. On the front page of the May 16 edition there was a story about Japan’s ancient capital, Pope John Paul II and an opening sentence about Capitol Hill that began, “It’s iffy.”

Meanwhile, 34 pages into the newspaper, there was a three-paragraph story in the “Community Briefs” section about a 17-year-old boy shot to death while sitting on a bus bench in Pacoima.

Accusations of racism should not be used lightly, but why are stories like this constantly buried in The Times? Is it because the boy is “believed” to be a gang member? Is it because he was in a poor neighborhood?

This story would have been front-page news had the boy been in Westwood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Santa Clarita or a Palestinian sitting on an Israeli bus bench.

The Times needs to stop treating senseless murders in our city and county like they are part of our everyday way of life.
