Patagonia Distribution Base to Stay in Ventura

Outdoor clothing manufacturer Patagonia Inc. has scrapped plans to move its distribution center from Ventura to Missoula, Mont.

“Our worldwide headquarters are in Ventura to stay, and I foresee no further steps to relocate the distribution unit,” spokeswoman Megan Montgomery said.

Montgomery said Patagonia’s work force in Ventura County has stabilized at about 280, down from 350 a year ago. The company employs 540 worldwide.

“We don’t expect any further cutbacks,” she said. “On the other hand, we have a hiring freeze. We’re deliberating trying to limit growth at this time.”

As part of the limited-growth policy, Montgomery said, Patagonia’s fall line will emphasize “cross-functional” apparel. “For example, instead of separate jackets for skiing, mountain climbing and various other sports, we’re designing jackets that can be used for any of these activities.”

Despite the recession, Montgomery said Patagonia’s sales in the year that ended April 31 rose to $117 million from $107 million the previous year, a gain of 9%. The company, a unit of privately held Lost Arrow Corp., does not release profit figures.

“Last year was a very scary time, but we’re now a healthier, tighter company,” Montgomery said.
