Four high schools were recognized Monday for leading Ventura County schools in blood donations.
Buena High and St. Bonaventure High in Ventura and Nordhoff High and Thacher School in Ojai were each given Lifesaver Awards for the efforts of their students, said Lauren Mourmouris, an official with United Blood Services.
The nonprofit group coordinates blood donations in Ventura County.
Buena beat out other public schools for the highest number of donors with 230, Mourmouris said.
St. Bonaventure took the honor among private schools with 90 donors, she said.
In the separate category honoring schools with the highest percentage of donors participating based on the size of their senior class, Nordhoff topped other public schools with 67%, and Thacher School won for private schools with 119%.
Some Thacher students donated more than once.
Altogether, 19 county high schools sponsored blood drives during the 1991-92 school year, Mourmouris said. The students collected 1,998 units of blood, enough to supply 4,000 transfusions to Ventura County patients, she said.
