The U.N. Conference on Environment and Development, opening Wednesday, is expected to bring at least 60 world leaders and 40,000 other people together for 11 days of discussions about ecological destruction, pollution and underdevelopment.
Near the end of the Earth Summit, as the meeting has been dubbed, organizers hope that representatives of about 160 nations will sign treaties preserving the diversity of plant and animal species and limiting emissions of carbon dioxide and other “greenhouse” gases that can result in global warming.
The summit agenda also includes proposals on ocean pollution, forest protection, population control, and sustainable economic development.
