OXNARD : City Offers to Help Stadium Developer

A proposal to build a minor league baseball stadium in Oxnard moved forward Tuesday as the City Council directed the city staff to help the developers begin working their way through the permit process.

Stanley Moorman, chief proponent of the $6.5-million stadium, told the council that a ballpark built on the site of the Skyview Drive-In at Wooley Road and Oxnard Boulevard could draw up to 4,100 spectators to each baseball game.

The stadium could also present concerts, soccer matches and football games, notably those played by Santa Clara High School, which does not have a field, Moorman said.

Moorman said he hopes to solve an on-site parking shortage by asking to borrow parking for 700 to 1,000 cars at the Oxnard School District headquarters just west of Oxnard Boulevard. The district could then charge $1 for parking, which would help raise money for the district, while a $3-per-vehicle fee at the stadium would be charged for spots closer to the diamond, he said.
