NEWPORT BEACH : Hotel Alternative at Site to Be Heard

The City Council will hold a public hearing Monday on land-use changes that would scrap a proposed a hotel expansion in favor of using the site for commercial space.

Developers proposing the change want to build about 41,000 square feet of commercial space in place of the earlier approved 119-room addition to an existing Sheraton Hotel.

However, city planners have proposed an alternative plan that would allow less commercial space.

Planners are concerned about traffic problems generated from the planned development and other potential size problems on the lot, and instead are requesting that the council approve a building plan of about 31,000 square feet.

The 2.4-acre site at the northwest corner of MacArthur Boulevard and Corinthian Way is planned for motel or hotel use, and the City Council would need to amend the city’s general plan to allow the change.

The Planning Commission unanimously approved the change in April, and there was no opposition at that meeting.
