Burbank Airport Runways to Be Enlarged

Share

The Santa Ana office of a Texas engineering firm has been awarded a $2-million contract to design and oversee the construction of an enlarged runway system at Burbank Airport.

Design and construction of the airport’s holding apron and resurfacing of its runway and service roads could be completed by the end of the year, Jim Hawley, a project manager for Greiner Engineering Inc., said Friday.

A holding apron is an area where airliners await permission to take off.

The contract also includes building a “blast fence,” which protects cars traveling along service roads near runways.

The project is similar to one that Greiner, based in Irving, Tex., is handling for John Wayne Airport in Orange County.
