A California Highway Patrol officer lost control of his patrol car while on duty, and it rolled several times down an embankment after hitting a tree, the CHP said Sunday.

Officer Ernest Sanchez, 22, bruised his left forearm and received scrapes and cuts on the left side of his face, the CHP said, adding that Sanchez worked his regular afternoon shift Sunday.

The accident occurred about 9:05 p.m. Saturday, about an hour before Sanchez was scheduled to go off duty, the CHP said.

He was driving south on Santa Ana Road, about 1 1/2 miles north of Casitas Vista Road in Foster Park when he felt the car drift toward the northbound lane, the CHP said.

He steered in the opposite direction but lost control for unknown reasons.

The car went off the road, hit a tree and then rolled several times down an embankment, the CHP said.

Sanchez crawled out and was able to get help at a nearby house.

He went to Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura for treatment and was released, the CHP said.
