SAN DIEGO : Community Group to Study Racism

Share

Hoping to become a “catalyst for change,” a San Diego community group formed in the wake of the Los Angeles riots met Monday to explore the causes and effects of racism.

Founded as a community outreach program by the Rev. George Walker Smith and George Mitrovich, longtime local activists, the San Diego Coalition for Equality broke into six task forces Monday, each charged with studying race relations within such topics as education, economics and the legal system.

Reports from each study group are due in several months, organizers said. Michael Madigan, senior vice president of Pardee Development Corp. and chairman of the San Diego County Water Authority, was named acting chairman of the coalition.
