A commuter plane crashed in a remote area of an eastern Alabama Army base Monday, killing three of the six people aboard, officials said.

GP Express Flight 861 originated in Atlanta and had been cleared to land at Anniston Airport about 8:50 a.m. The wreckage was found on the Ft. McClellan base about 10 miles to the northeast more than 2 1/2 hours later.

Fog and rain were reported in the area when the plane crashed, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman in Atlanta said.
