BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Parrish Faces Possible Week Layoff

Lance Parrish will have the dressing and splint removed from his right thumb today, but he might be sidelined as long as a week.

The nail was bent backward Sunday when his thumb was hit by a pitch as he swung, and the top half of the nail was later removed. He was unavailable Monday and probably will be unable to throw for a few days.

“He can hit in a few days, but he might not throw for five or seven days,” interim Manager John Wathan said. “The thumb guides the ball when you throw, and it would be real tough for him now.”

Parrish said the thumb was tender Monday, but he was hopeful of playing within a few days.

Outfielder Shawn Abner, who was released by the Angels during spring training, started his sixth game for the White Sox since they purchased his contract from triple-A Vancouver on May 4.

“These guys seemed really interested, so here I am and I’m doing all right, playing against lefties,” said Abner, who was hitting .294 and went two for four in Monday’s game. “I’m glad I ended up here. I knew this team would be on top.”

The Angels signed Darrin Sutton, son of former major leaguer Don Sutton, and assigned him to their Mesa team in the Arizona Rookie League. Sutton, a right-handed pitcher at Auburn University at Montgomery, Ala., wasn’t chosen in last week’s draft. . . . Wathan juggled his lineup a bit, moving Von Hayes from third to second in the batting order and playing Jose Gonzalez in center field. Rene Gonzales started at shortstop for the first time, although he has played the position several times after opening the game at a different one. It was only the third game Gary DiSarcina hasn’t started at short this season.

Third baseman Gary Gaetti was back in the lineup after missing three games because of a sore left elbow. “It bothers me a little when I swing, but it should be OK after a couple of days off,” he said. . . . Junior Felix, on the disabled list because of a strained groin muscle, will be ready to play when he’s eligible for activation Thursday, according to trainer Ned Bergert. . . . Outfielder John Morris had flu Monday and was sent back to the team hotel.
