LEMON GROVE : Officers Say Suspect Altered Appearance

Law enforcement officers are continuing their search for a 26-year-old transient in connection with the shooting of a sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop in Lemon Grove.

Detectives said Wednesday that they believe that James Michael Bright has dramatically altered his appearance to escape charges of attempted murder. Bright, whose photograph has circulated showing him with shaggy long hair and facial hair, has cut his hair short and shaved, sheriff’s spokeswoman Victoria Reden said.

Deputy Paul E. Kain, 34, was shot three times in the lower body Saturday morning after he stopped a car for a broken light in the 8500 block of Palm Street. As he approached the car, the driver opened fire with a handgun.

Kain was listed in fair condition Wednesday at UC San Diego Medical Center.

After the shooting, authorities learned that the car pulled over by Kain had been reported stolen. It was recovered Saturday night in El Cajon.

Bright is described as white, 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds. He has the word Wizzard tattooed on his right arm and Lisa tattooed on his left. Bright is believed to be accompanied by Heather Anne McVey, 23, of Lakeside, who did not participate in the shooting but is wanted for questioning, Reden said.

Authorities believe Bright has a gun and possibly a hand grenade. They asked anyone with information to call 692-5600 or 565-5200.
