State Sen. Bill Greene (D-Los Angeles), who is retiring this year because of ill health, was rushed from the Capitol to a local hospital Wednesday after complaining of dizziness.

Jerri Dale, a spokeswoman for Mercy General Hospital, refused to discuss the condition of the veteran 60-year-old lawmaker, saying it was “under assessment.”

Senate colleagues said Greene, chairman of the Senate Industrial Relations Committee, appeared fit while presiding over a committee hearing for more than two hours Wednesday morning. Shortly afterward, however, he complained of dizziness, according to Steven Glazer, press secretary to Senate President Pro Tem David A. Roberti (D-Van Nuys).

Greene, whose district includes South Los Angeles, was hospitalized in 1990 and 1991 for alcoholism, a heart attack and pneumonia. During that period, Greene was increasingly absent and missed more than 50% of Senate votes. Greene was first elected to the Assembly in 1966 and stepped up to the Senate in a 1975 special election.
