Thomas Plate, editorial pages editor of the Los Angeles Times, will speak at Santa Monica College’s graduation ceremony June 18.

About 400 students are expected to receive their associate of arts degrees at the ceremony, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the Amphitheater, 1900 Pico Blvd.

Plate, who teaches a weekly journalism seminar at the college, will donate his honorarium to a scholarship fund for Latino or African-American students. Plate came to The Times in 1989 from New York Newsday, where he spent three years as editor of the editorial pages.
