Clinton Hits ‘Quayle-Bush’ for Narrow Focus on Family Values

Democratic presidential contender Bill Clinton criticized the “Quayle-Bush” Administration Thursday for raising so-called family value issues in such a way as to exclude many Americans.

“The thing that bothers me is, there are so many people in America who believe in family values and hard work and play by the rules and are still getting the shaft,” the governor said as he left Little Rock for a fund-raiser in New Jersey.

It is those people, he said, “that I’m speaking up for and the people the Quayle-Bush Administration ignore. They never talk about their responsibilities to the people that do observe those values.”

Citing the Los Angeles riots, Clinton continued: “Most of the people did not riot, did not loot, did not burn. But they are still faced with declining income and difficult lives. What about them? Those are the people I’m trying to help.

“I’m getting tired of people who have responsibilities to the American people, like the vice president, pretending that the only problems are the absence of values.”

Also Thursday, a Clinton aide said that because the campaign is facing a cash-flow problem, its estimated 200 salaried staffers will not be paid Monday as scheduled.

It was not immediately clear how long the delay will be, said Dee Dee Myers, the Clinton campaign’s spokeswoman.
