Notes on a Scorecard - June 16, 1992

Manager Tom Lasorda said he would try anything to get the Dodgers winning again. OK, Lasorda, here are some suggestions:

--As Billy Martin once did, pick the names of your batting order out of a hat. . . .

--Recommend that Fred Claire trade for Juan Guzman, Dave Stewart, Bob Welch, Mike Devereaux, Tim Belcher, Eddie Murray, Alfredo Griffin, Sid Bream, Candy Maldonado, Rick Sutcliffe, John Franco, Sid Fernandez and Kevin Campbell. . . .

--Equip Jose Offerman and Juan Samuel with radar. . . .

--Call up the Albuquerque farm club--or, better yet, San Antonio--for a day. . . .

--Cancel infield practice. . . .

--Appoint Kal Daniels head jeerleader. . . .

--When Eric Davis gets off the disabled list, put him at shortstop, where he never got hurt at Fremont High. . . .

--For instructional tips, take the team to a showing of “A League of Their Own.” . . .

--Send Mike Brito on another scouting mission to Etchohuaquila. . . .

--Bring back spicy dogs. . . .

Fay Vincent should reinstate Pete Rose, not George Steinbrenner, although Steinbrenner’s return is no sure thing now. . . .

Jason Kendall, a catcher who is the son of Fred, was the third son of a former major league player to have been drafted during the first round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dale Berra, son of Yogi, was taken in 1975 and Barry Bonds, son of Bobby, in 1985. . . .

Dave Righetti, the San Francisco Giant pitcher who was rocked in his second game as a starter this season, appears to be near the end of a distinguished career. . . .

The Oakland Athletics are in first place in the American League West without many significant contributions from either Henderson, Rickey or Dave. . . .

Among those trying to help the Greater Milwaukee Committee keep the Brewers in that city are former Milwaukee baseball players Henry Aaron and Johnny Logan. . . .

If nothing else, Larry Holmes could have the home-ring advantage against Evander Holyfield Friday night in Las Vegas. Holmes is 12-0 at Caesars Palace, including the decision over Ken Norton that won him the World Boxing Council title in 1978. . . .

At 42 years and seven months, Holmes will be the second-oldest man to fight for a world championship. Archie Moore was 42 years and 11 months when he was knocked out by Floyd Patterson during the fifth round in 1956 for the heavyweight title that had been vacated by Rocky Marciano. George Foreman was 42 years and three months when he lost a decision to Holyfield last year. . . .

In the semifinal Friday, Yory Boy Campas, 41-0 with 37 knockouts, will challenge Roger Turner for the North American Boxing Federation welterweight title. . . .

“Yory Boy reminds me of Pajarito Moreno,” says Don Chargin, who promotes Campas’ fights and managed Moreno in the early 1960s, when the Little Bird was a big favorite at the Hollywood Legion Stadium and Olympic Auditorium. “He has a tremendous left hook and he raises welts on shoulders, arms and chest. He has a lot to learn on defense.” . . .

Campas, 20, is becoming the most popular athlete from the Navajoa region of Mexico since Fernando Valenzuela. . . .

For the record: Because of an editing error, it was incorrectly reported here Monday that Mark Gastineau was knocked out by Tim (Doc) Anderson last week. Anderson won a five-round decision over Gastineau. . . .

Ascot Park’s last auto racing card was Thanksgiving Day, 1990, and still no replacement is in the works. . . .

Larry Smith and members of his USC staff will conduct a clinic for inner-city high school football coaches next week. . . .

Orange County report: The Trojans will practice at UC Irvine Aug. 17-25 in preparation for the opener at San Diego State Sept. 5, and Marv Goux will be master of ceremonies at the annual “Salute to Troy” kickoff banquet Aug. 22 at the Irvine Marriott. . . .

Jerry Buss’ son Jim passed his test last week and has been licensed as a thoroughbred trainer in California. . . .

Most of the prominent Hollywood Park jockeys will play baseball tonight at 6 against the Temple City Pony League all-stars at Arcadia County Park. Proceeds will help finance the Pony Leaguers’ goodwill tour of Japan. . . .

Track and field promoter Al Franken is predicting that Andre Cason will beat Leroy Burrell and Carl Lewis in the 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic trials at New Orleans. . . .

A weekend in New Orleans in June is a perfect way to prepare the team for the heat of Barcelona July 31-Aug. 9. . . .

The worst thing about the Chicago Bulls winning consecutive NBA titles is that we will have to hear “three-peat” a few thousand times next season.
